چکیده

C. elegans is a round worm that lives in wet soil and moves by undulating its body in a sinusoidal wave. We perform experiments on wild-type C. elegans swimming in a granular medium composed of 98 m glass particles and aqueous fluid. Figure 1 shows that a worm swims faster in a granular medium V 0.46 mm /s than in a fluid without particles V 0.37 mm /s . C. elegans in a granular medium undulates at a lower frequency and with the same amplitude. We measured the Strouhal number St= fA /V , a ratio of lateral to forward velocity, to characterize the surrogate efficiency of locomotion. Swimming motion in a granular medium, which more closely simulates its natural environment, is more efficient St 0.5 than swimming in a fluid St 1.5 . FIG. 1. a A wild-type C. elegans swims in a wet granular medium and b in a fluid. CHAOS 18, 041106 2008

Caenorhabditis elegans swimming in a saturated particulate system

Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is a nematode that often swims in saturated soil in nature. We investigated the locomotive behavior of C. elegans swimming in a fluid with particles of various sizes and found that the nematode swims a greater distance per undulation than it does in a fluid without particles. The Strouhal number a ratio of lateral to forward velocity of C. elegans significant...

Undulatory locomotion of C. elegans on wet surfaces

The physical and bio-mechanical principles that govern undulatory movement on wet surfaces have important applications in physiology, physics, and engineering. The nematode C. elegans, with its highly stereotypical and functionally distinct sinusoidal locomotory gaits, is an excellent system in which to dissect these properties. Measurements of the main forces governing the C. elegans crawling ...

Efficient nematode swimming in a shear thinning colloidal suspension.

The swimming behavior of a nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is investigated in a non-Newtonian shear thinning colloidal suspension. At the onset value (ϕ∼ 8%), the suspension begins to exhibit shear thinning behavior, and the average swimming speed of worms jumps by approximately 12% more than that measured in a Newtonian solution exhibiting no shear dependent viscosity. In the shea...

Restore to good health in baby turtle, Trachemys scripta elegans with chronic anorexia and blind eyes

As the first case, a baby red eared slider turtle, Trachemys scripta elegans, 1.77 inches long, with a 4 month history of anorexia and blind eyes was referred to the Aquatic Animal Clinic, School of Veterinary Medicine, Shiraz University, Iran. The eyes of the pet were swollen and he was not active in swimming and feeling around. In the clinic, after stress treatment, he was kept in a clean aqu...

Influence of Compaction Condition on the Microstructure of a Non-Plastic Glacial Till

The influence of compaction water content on the structure has been well known forclayey soils, but has never been studied for granular materials. In this paper the structure of a nonplastictill and the effect of compaction moisture is investigated by means of water retention curvestudy, scanning electron microscopy and mercury intrusion porosimetry tests. The results show thatwhen compacted on...
